Season Two

This Soul of the Yard episode will focus on "Literacy and Legacy: Deepening Understanding of HBCUs," kicking off Season 2 and hosted by the Center for HBCU Research, Leadership, and Policy. In this episode, we explore the HBCU Literacy Series, examining both the historical and contemporary roles of HBCUs in shaping higher education. Our expert panel, moderated by Isaiah Lucas (Ph.D. student, Howard University), features Dr. Melanie Carter (Associate Provost, Howard University), Dr. Reginald K. Ellis (Associate Professor, Florida A&M University), and Dr. Omari H. Swinton Jr. (Professor, Howard University). Together, they discuss critical themes such as HBCU leadership, policy literacy, and student success, providing insights into the transformative influence of these institutions on academic and social progress.

This Soul of The Yard episode will focus on the historical and contemporary role of HBCU students in shaping American democracy. The HBCU Center in collaboration with Dr. Wilkerson, our panelists and Civic Nation’s ALL In Initiative, hosted Unleash the Vote, a Voter Mobilization Project on October 10th here at Howard University. The October 10th convening featured the release of a voter guide and a voter toolkit and was timely for a host of reasons – but also because it was held on the inaugural HBCU Democracy Day initiated by Dr. Jelani Favors Director of NC A&T’s Center of Excellence and Social Justice. Dr. Favors author of Shelter in a Time of Storm: How Black Colleges Fostered Generations of Leadership and Activism, envisioned HBCU Democracy Day as an opportunity to “lean back into that tradition, that legacy, and sort of reignite our students’ understanding of democracy and citizenship and civic engagement and how black colleges have really been at the forefront of that struggle again since their very inception.” So, in that spirit, today’s conversation is our effort to extend the October 10th conversation and again explore why civic participation is an integral part of the HBCU tradition.
